Carpet Cleaners Comparison Chart Notes
Each of the cleaners reviewed below are high quality and earn a top 10 or better rating on our Carpet Cleaning Machines Reviews site.
Regular Upright Full-sized Cleaners – This chart lists to best regular upright full-sized carpet cleaners on the market purchased for home use. Regular upright carpet cleaners are the most sought-after carpet cleaning machines purchased by home users for general home carpet cleaning.
To be clear, the listings above does not include professional grade cleaners that more and more home users are purchasing. Professional grade cleaners like the Bissell 86T3 and Rug Doctor clean even better and have the least maintenance problems, but are also more costly. See a detailed comparison of Professional Vs. Regular Upright cleaners.
Cleaning Power Technology – This summarizes the various technologies incorporated into different carpet cleaner machine models. It’s especially helpful when choosing machines from the same brand. For example, you can tell that the SpinScrub feature is a mainstay for full-powered Hoover cleaners. Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge has the “Clean Surge” feature that most other Hoover cleaners lack. More information about benefits of the specific technology can be found in the detailed reviews like this.
Water Tank Size – Most full powered upright carpet cleaning machines incorporate a 1 gallon water tank. Only a few have slightly larger tank sizes of 1.14 gallons. A larger tank size allows more cleaning to be done with less empty/fill trips to the sink, but it means the user needs to push around a slightly heavier load of water.
Water Tank System – Hoover cleaners typically have two-tanks systems with separate clean/dirty water tanks. Bissell’s have a single tank set-up that incorporates a “bladder” bag for storing clean water inside. The separate clean/dirty water tank system appear to be better liked, although the single “bladder” tank system works fine for most users. See a comparison of Tank System Vs Two Tank System in this Hoover vs Bissell article (scroll down).
Heated Air For Faster Drying – Some machines are designed to direct heated air onto the carpets for quicker drying.
Widepath – Widepath machines typically have a cleaning nozzle width that is 20% wider. This means that more carpets can be shampooed and cleaned with each cleaning stroke, thereby saving time and effort. This is something to consider along with a larger water tank size (described above).
Cleaning Nozzle Width – The width span of the cleaning nozzle. A standard size is around 11 inches wide, while a widepath machine is around 13 inches wide.
Power Rating – The amperage power of the machine motor measured in Amps. While a larger power rating may give the machine an edge, the overall design and engineering of machine also plays an important role in how well the machine operates and cleans.
Rinse Only Setting – This allows carpets to be rinsed and cleaned without detergent through the flip of a switch. More and more people are seeking this feature as they recognize the health benefits of removing as much residual detergent as possible when shampooing their carpets.
Built-in Water Heater – Carpet cleaners typically allow do not have water heaters to heat up water, with the exception of a few Bissell cleaners.
Hand Tools – Hand tools and attachments allow upholstery, furniture, stairs, autos and hard to reach places to be cleaned. A good hand tools package allow for the carpet cleaning machine to clean beyond just floor carpeting. Additional hand tools are usually made available for purchase, but being given a good set at the beginning saves on future costs and makes a great start.
Hard Floor Cleaning – Some carpet shampooers are also able to clean hard floors like linoleum, hard wood (sealed) and ceramic tiles. Some machines come designed as a combo cleaners with dedicated hard floor cleaning accessories included. Others will accept optional attachments that can be purchased separately. Yet other machine models should not be used to clean hard floors at all according to the manufacturer. Be sure to read the manual and official instructions before your first hard floor cleaning attempt.
Warranty – Warranty ranges for 1 to 3 years. The longer, the better. Warranties have a value to them. Users pay extra for extended year warranties. Square trade link.
Weight – Some people specifically pick out a lighter weight machine, while others are neutral to the weight as the machine is pushed on wheels on the carpet. A gallon of water will add another 8.34 lbs to the total weight when using the machine.
